PTO World Rankings: Samorin stars Lee and Margirier the big movers

featured image

There was surprisingly little movement in the revamped PTO World Rankings despite what was an incredibly busy weekend.

That wasn’t because of a lack of top performances – more the fact there were so many of them that the status quo largely remains.

No fewer than three of the PTO’s top seven women notched wins – Paula Findlay at IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga, Laura Philipp at 70.3 Kraichgau and Emma Pallant-Browne at 70.3 Aix-en-Provence – but they remain #4, #6 and #7 respectively.

The exception to the rule on the female side was India Lee who notched the biggest victory of her career at Challenge Family’s The Championship which saw her jump from #21 to #13.

Magirier makes his mark

It was a similar story for the men with the only changes in the top 10 seeing Aaron Royle and Daniel Bækkegård swap places at #8 and #9 after Royle’s runner up spot in Samorin.

The man who beat him to the tape at The Championship was Mathis Margirier, who claimed a breakthrough success.

And that’s seen the Frenchman power 18 places up the rankings to #23.

How do the PTO Rankings work?

This is not just about kudos – the top 50 athletes are fighting it out for a bonus pool worth a cool $2million in the ‘Race For The Rankings’. This will be dished out based on rankings at the end of 2023.

Each athlete has a points total which is an average of their three best races during the ranking period and all aspects of the process are covered here.

Final PTO Rankings for 2020

2020 was the first year that PTO implemented their Year End Annual Bonus Programme, to be based upon the PTO Rankings, eligible for the top-100 ranked athletes. Initially set at $2million, the impact of the COVID pandemic saw that paid out early – and with the total topped up to $2.5million.

That first year saw Jan Frodeno and Daniela Ryf top the pandemic-impacted rankings – Men | Women.
