Napoli have clinched the Serie A title for the first time in 33 years after a gritty 1-1 draw against Udinese. It was an emotional moment for the Naples-based club, who have yearned for this moment for over three decades. The triumph marks an incredible achievement for the club, which has been rebuilding its reputation under the leadership of coach Luciano Spalletti.

The decisive goal was scored by Victor Osimhen, who has been in scintillating form all season. With his title-winning goal, Osimhen also surpassed Samuel Eto’o’s record for the most goals in a single Serie A season accumulating a total of 22 goals in 27 appearances. The Nigerian striker has become a cult hero among Napoli fans, who have been chanting his name throughout the season.

This is Napoli’s first Serie A title since Diego Maradona led them to victory in 1990.

Napoli’s triumph has been a team effort, with several players putting in incredible performances throughout the campaign. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, a player described by coach Spalletti as a “dragon with two heads” was instrumental in securing most of their wins, and his contribution has not gone unnoticed by his teammates and the fans.

Spalleti, a native of Certaldo, Metropolitan City of Florence, promised Naepolitans the scudetto when taking up the job after spending two years on his farm due to his Inter Milan sack. After two years in charge of the team, Spalletti has built a team to dominate serial Serie A winners Juventus and defending champions AC Milan, returning the scudetto to Napoli after 33 years.

The victory brought joy and celebration to the streets of Naples, with fans gathering to celebrate the long-awaited triumph. The city erupted in euphoria as fireworks lit up the sky and car horns blared in celebration. The players and coaching staff are expected to receive a hero’s welcome upon their return to Naples.

“I can’t wait to return to Napoli and hug the fans. I’m so happy for them. No one deserves the Scudetto more than Neapolitans,” Osimhen said after the match against Udinese.

Napoli’s coach Luciano Spalletti echoed his sentiments, saying, “Napoli, this is for you.”

In 2015, Osimhen won the FIFA U17 Golden Boot, FIFA U17 Silver Ball and CAF Youth Player of the Year. In 2019, he won the Lille Player of the Season. And in 2020, he won the Prix Marc-Vivien Foé. He is fans’ favourite to win the African Men’s Player of the Year in 2023.
