Kanellakos abruptly resigned in November, two days before the scathing LRT report was released to the public.

Wendy Stephanson was appointed interim city manager while the Odgers Berndtson was hired to conduct a thorough search for candidates to assume the role of the city’s top bureaucrat.

Stephanson, according to her City of Ottawa profile, serves as council’s chief administrator “leading the organization to deliver services across more than 100 distinct lines of business through 10 departments and 17,000 employees.”

According to a report from the Odgers Berndtson firm, the panel will learn the names on the confidential list of candidates for the position Friday.

Sutcliffe is joined by councillors Catherine Kitts, Shawn Menard and Tim Tierney on the hiring panel.

The Odgers Berndtson firm is also expected to provide a “confidential interview guide” to the four-member panel and will “make the necessary arrangements for the hiring panel to interview candidates” for the first round of interviews.

The report also outlines the anticipated schedule of the hiring process over the panel’s next four meetings.

The first round of interviews will be conducted virtually, according to the report, and the second round will be held in-person with preferred candidates.

The Odgers Berndtson firm will also arrange for those interviews and will “conduct reference and background checks on any preferred candidate(s) who may be recommended by the hiring panel.”

The panel will also receive “the results of any reference and background checks conducted by Odgers Berndtson, and (will) identify the recommended candidate to be brought forward for City Council’s consideration and approval.”

The panel is set to meet this Friday, with other scheduled meetings on May 19, June 2 and 9.

The new city manager is expected to be named by the panel at the June 9 meeting, with the recommended candidate “to be brought forward for City Council’s consideration and approval … at or immediately preceding the next regular City Council meeting following the conclusion of the hiring panel’s deliberations.”
