Short-video platform Douyin, China’s ByteDance-owned TikTok sibling, has separated its food delivery business into a standalone division, with the vice president of the local life services team directly overseeing the new unit, according to local media outlet 36Kr. The move reflects the increasing significance of the takeaway business to Douyin, which is presently testing group-buying package deliveries in Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. During its eco-partnership conference held in late April in Chengdu, Douyin disclosed that total sales from its local life services grew sevenfold in 2022 compared to the previous year. The platform’s local life services now cover more than 370 cities, with over 2 million partner stores providing services from sightseeing bookings and motorcycle maintenance to food delivery.
