AQAW is an opportunity for people to learn about what causes poor air quality and how people can prepare for and respond to events and environments with poor air quality.

Since 2007, Air Quality Awareness Week (AQAW) has been recognized throughout the United States. This year, AQAW took place from May 1st to the 5th and the theme was Working Together for Clean Air.

The annual event is supported by AirNow – the home of the U.S. Air Quality Index (AQI), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and partners such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and other federal, state, local and tribal agencies.

EPA describes AQAW as an opportunity for people to learn about what causes poor air quality and how people can prepare for and respond to events and environments with poor air quality. Each year, specific daily topics are announced, this year they include:

  • Wildfires & Smoke
  • Asthma and Your Health
  • Air Quality and Transportation
  • Air Quality and Climate
  • Participatory Science

One of the topics that has been covered multiple times during Air Quality Awareness Week is asthma, said Franco Seif, President of Clark Seif Clark (CSC). There are a number of asthma triggers people are exposed to in their daily lives at home, school or in the work environment. These may include tobacco smoke, dust mites, mold, outdoor air pollution, cockroach allergens, pet dander, various chemicals, fragrances, and smoke from wildfires or burning wood for heat. Understanding these triggers, and mitigating exposure to them, are important parts of managing asthma. At CSC, our indoor environmental quality and industrial hygiene professionals provide air testing, monitoring and consulting services to identify and mitigate exposure to biological and chemical asthma triggers, allergens, pathogens and respiratory irritants.

Last year, CSC sponsored an educational video about AQAW that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/XRzwmVzZspE
