The Best Spice Rack for Small Spaces

Before I got serious about kitchen organization and invested in the best spice rack I could find, I’d engage in the same ritual every time I cooked or baked. Jar by jar, I’d pull out every spice container, looking for the cumin or cinnamon or oregano or that one great masala. Prize in hand, I’d then shove everything back into the kitchen cabinet in no particular order. Inevitably, a spice tin would get lost somewhere in the back, and the next time I needed it I’d assume we were out and buy more.

I paid attention to all the spice storage rules, keeping them in their airtight spice bottles, stored safely away from light and heat behind the cabinet door. Wasn’t that enough? Well, no, Jarrett, that’s why you have three jars of dried dill. (True story.)

It was time for a change. I wanted a cabinet organizer that took advantage of the height and depth of the shelves in our cupboards and pantry. Lining up 2- and 4-inch tall glass jars on a shelf with 12 inches of clearance is a waste of precious vertical cabinet space, especially if you’re working with a small kitchen.

After some diligent online research, I found the YouCopia SpiceStack. This three-tier spice rack is a freestanding mini cabinet for your kitchen counter or pantry. Compact and low profile, this spice organizer fits easily in a small cupboard, on pantry shelves, or a countertop. It holds a minimum of 24 standard, 4-inch tall spice jars, either square or round, or up to 48 2-inch tall jars. If you’re blessed with lots of vertical space and a robust number of spices, level up your kitchen storage and buy two: They’re designed to be stackable. This minimalist spice cabinet comes in white or granite, and the drawer dividers can be adjusted or even removed to accommodate jars of nearly any height.

YouCopia Adjustable Spice Rack

Some home cooks swear by kitchen drawer organizers, the lazy susan storage solution, over-the-pantry-door or kitchen-wall-mounted spice racks. All have their advantages, but one design facet of the YouCopia SpiceStack makes it my top pick for pantry organization: If your available storage space is above eye level, the spice drawers pull out fully and drop down at an angle, offering easy access and visibility. Because it comes with labels, you never have to guess which tier the turmeric is in. And don’t stress: This countertop spice rack has nonslip feet so you don’t have to worry about pulling it off the shelf when you slide out a drawer.

Since buying this versatile spice rack, I no longer have duplicates or triplicates of any spice, seasoning, or herb—but that hasn’t seemed to stop our spice collection from growing. Looks like a second SpiceStack is in my future.
