A new PlayStation 5 Pro report from a gaming industry insider has claimed that the mid-generation console upgrade is already in development and could even be launched in 2024. The information about the potential PS5 Pro release comes from the same source who revealed details about an upcoming revised PS5 console with a detachable disk drive.

Hot on the heels of one tech-savvy commenter opining that Sony may not have the resources to produce a PlayStation 5 Pro console comes another well-known tech reporter claiming that PS5 Pro development has already begun. Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming is transparent enough in his reporting to state that the information about the PS5 Pro does sound very much like a “trust me, bro” kind of rumor, but he is also insistent that new PS5 consoles are coming before the PlayStation 6 gets its chance to shine.

According to the source, there is even a “tentative release date” of late 2024 for the PlayStation 5 Pro (likely November if based on Sony’s launch history for the PlayStation series). While some might claim that would be too soon for a mid-generation release, it’s worth remembering that the PlayStation 4 was launched in November 2013 and then the PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim turned up barely three years later in late 2016 (with a PS4 Pro revision launching in 2017). Unsurprisingly, no PS5 Pro specs are on offer, but you can almost guarantee Mark Cerny is likely looking at boosting ray-tracing capabilities at least, if he is involved in its design.

Interestingly, one of the statements included in this new PS5 Pro-related report reads that this mid-generation launch is, “just the beginning of new hardware coming to PlayStation users this generation”. If this unnamed source actually has genuine knowledge of what’s going on with development, then it could be time to throw archaic naming ideals of “Pro” and “Slim” to the wind as Sony potentially ramps up the PS5 production line for a whole range of console revisions. The rumored PS5 with detachable disk drive still hasn’t got a confirmed unique name and the PS5 Pro may end up being called something entirely different.

Undoubtedly, such a “PS5 Pro launch in 2024” scheme would assist Sony in maximizing the earning potential that the PlayStation 5 generation offers. The original PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition consoles are still selling in vast numbers when available (over 32 million units shipped), and Sony is well aware of how things develop when Pro/Slim/Lite/Ultra/Mystery models are added to a popular consumer electronic device’s generation. For instance, by mid-2017, the PlayStation 4 Pro was already making up 20% of all PS4 consoles being sold at the time. Tellingly, 40% of those PS4 Pro sales were made by customers who already owned a PS4 and were upgrading. Loyal fans will always fill their favorite company’s coffers.
