The PGA Tour hosts its biggest event of the season Thursday as the 2023 Players Championship gets underway at TPC Sawgrass … and it should be an absolute slugfest. There are storylines for days. The top three players in the world — Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy — are also perhaps the three hottest players in the game right now with five combined wins between them since the start of the year.
That’s before getting to guys like Max Homa, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffle and Collin Morikawa … not to mention TPC Sawgrass. This tournament and this golf course nearly always deliver the goods, and this year should be especially fun considering how much momentum the Tour has at its back along with the strength of the field (44 of the top 50 players in the world).
Add it all up, and The Players is going to rock from Thursday morning onward. There will be a ton of huge names chasing Rahm, Scheffler and McIlroy with the biggest non-major trophy of the year up for grabs at one of the most entertaining golf courses on the planet.
What will go down at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday? Check out the scores at the top of the page and Round 1 tee times as you keep on reading for live updates and highlights from the first round of the 2023 Players Championship.

Two guys playing worse than I thought today are Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele. Both are 1 over, but Fitzpatrick just hit one in the water on No. 17 and Schauffele has an eagle putt on No. 16. Could end up five shots apart by the end of the round.

Thomas’ speed causing issues
The putter has betrayed 2021 Players Champion Justin Thomas. With three three-putts to his name in Round 1, he finds himself at 1 over in the late stages of his round. He is actually striking the ball well but ranks 134th in strokes gained putting and 90th in strokes gained around the green.

Spieth spiething
He’s had a little bit of everything today. After turning in even, Spieth rattled off three straight birdies from Nos. 10-12 to get to 3 under and just converted a sick up-and-down to remain there. He has nine one putts through 13 holes.

Nick Watney has two 7s on his back nine, including a 4-putt on No. 17 in which he missed a one-handed putt from 9 inches. Tough scene.
