In this interview, he explains the basis of this damning prediction and discusses why and how the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are too conservative and diluted. Abrupt climate change and why we’re in the midst of it
Most people refer to anthropogenic climate change – climate change caused by humans as opposed to the ‘natural climate change’, which has occurred in the past many times –primarily as a result of the Milankovitch cycle. People can look that up. It’s easy enough, simple to understand. It has to do with a slight wobble of the Earth’s rotation. In any event, through human activity we have far exceeded what goes on with the Milankovitch cycle.
In fact, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded that climate change is abrupt in its 8 October 2018 report, ‘Global Warming of 1.5 degrees’. I’m going to quote here from that report: “These global level rates of human-driven change far exceed the rates of change driven by geophysical or biosphere forces that have altered the Earth’s system trajectory in the past. Even abrupt geophysical events do not approach current rates of human-driven change.”
So, in other words, as a result of human activity, industrialisation, putting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, we have far exceeded what has ever happened in Earth’s past. And we go back two billion years with this information. In the last two billion years, there has not been anything that even closely parallels what human activity is producing in terms of the rapidity of climate change.
McPherson’s claim that the IPCC is too conservative a scientific body
They are too conservative. The peer reviewed evidence is very conservative. I’m not saying what you’re saying, that it goes the other direction. It’s not anti-conservative. It is very conservative. The findings are very reliable and they don’t go far enough. Each new assessment – you know, the assessments come out every few years – and each new assessment looks back at the previous assessment and concludes, “Oh, my, it’s worse than that.” Every single one of them so far, each of the six, has concluded the previous assessment was too conservative. Now even the IPCC admits we are in the midst of abrupt and irreversible climate change. Irreversible.
