The January transfer window has little more than a week left before it slams shut and Newcastle United are yet to make their first senior addition of the month.

Garang Kuol arrived on a permanent deal from Central Coast Mariners at the start of January and the 18-year-old has since been sent out on loan to Hearts in the Premiership.

This means that Dan Ashworth has not added to Eddie Howe’s squad to bolster the side heading into the second half of the season but the Magpies chief still has time left to change that before the end of the month.

Newcastle have allowed striker Chris Wood, who only joined the club from Burnley at this time last year, to sign for fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest on loan and that leaves a gap in the squad for attacking reinforcements to come in.

The Sun recently reported that the Magpies are interested in a swoop to sign Everton centre-forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin in a £35m deal this month, although they are prepared to wait until the summer if they need to.

It was stated that the Toffees are preparing for offers for their number nine and that it is expected that the forward will want to leave Goodison Park if they are relegated to the Championship at the end of the campaign.

Would Calvert-Lewin be good signing for Newcastle?

Yes!

Yes!

Not for me!

Not for me!

Howe must now push for a deal to be done this month as the Everton marksman could be a dream replacement for Wood at St. James’ Park heading into the final months of the season, due to the potential link-up that he could have with Kieran Trippier.

Calvert-Lewin’s former teammate, Richarlison, once hailed him as a “nightmare” for defenders and claimed that the gem is “like (Cristiano) Ronaldo” in the way that he leaps over players to win headers.

19 of his 46 Premier League goals have come with his head and this suggests that the England international could be a huge threat from crosses and set-pieces for the Magpies.

First up, who scored Newcastle’s first goal of 2022?

Trippier would surely love to have his international colleague on his side at club level as his exceptional delivery from out wide has not been used effectively this season.

The right-back has created 16 ‘big chances’ and accrued 7.83 expected assists, from four successful crosses per game, for his teammates in the Premier League but has only been rewarded with four assists.

This suggests that the defender has been let down by Newcastle’s current attacking options on a number of occasions and Calvert-Lewin’s proficiency in the air could change that.

The striker, who scored 29 Premier League goals during the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns, has proven that he can score with his head at an impressive rate in the top flight and could, therefore, be the dream striker for Trippier to play crosses to.
