Avatar: The Way of Water has won its fifth global box office as it crossed $1.89 billion globally, and it is now very close to becoming the sixth-biggest global release in history over Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $1.91 billion.

As reported by Variety, Avatar: The Way of Water brought in $31.1 million over the weekend in North America and is expected to bring in $38.5 million overall over the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend that includes Monday, January 16.

In North America, Avatar: The Way of Water has brought in $570 million, and its international total has reached $1.3 billion. As we previously mentioned, it should pass Spider-Man: No Way Home as the sixth-biggest global release in history any day now, and will then set its sights on Avengers: Infinity War’s $2.04 billion.

While Avatar had another strong outing, M3GAN also continued to impress by taking second place with $17.9 million and an estimated $21.2 million over the holiday weekend as a whole. This was a roughly 40% drop from its opening weekend, which is a really great stat, especially for a horror film.

Overseas, M3GAN raked in another $15.4 million to help its global total reach $90 million.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish took third place with $13.4 million domestically, Tom Hanks’ A Man Called Otto opened to a respectable $12.6 million domestically and earned the fourth place spot, and Gerard Butler’s Plane rounded out the top five with $10 million opening weekend.

In our review of A Man Called Otto we said that it “may have a tear-jerking performance from Tom Hanks, but there’s little else to make this simple story stand out.”

In our review of Plane, we said, “With more plane than the trailers promised, Gerard Butler vehicle Plane ends up being a surprisingly good time.”
