Tesla will be helping the Chinese authorities get to the bottom of a sudden Model Y acceleration accident that left several people dead with the pedal being fully depressed at one point. A driver’s relative claims sudden brakes failure as the investigators rule out substance abuse.

Tesla China said today that it will be helping the police investigation into a fatal sudden Model Y acceleration accident that left two people dead and three injured. The incident happened on November 5 in the Chinese province of Guangdong and linked surveillance camera footage shows the Model Y pulling over in front of a store then suddenly getting back on the road and speeding drastically without braking for more than a mile and a half, hitting motorcyclists and people along the way until it swerves and crashes in order to stop.

A relative of the driver claims that he had troubles with the brake pedal while pulling over and then the issues continued all the while the car was quickly accelerating without visible efforts to apply the brakes. Reportedly, the driver tried several times to press the parking brake button which are the only times that the rear brake lights briefly light up throughout the freaky accident.

According to Tesla’s own investigation, the driver didn’t apply the brakes once when the car was out of control, while at one point the accelerator pedal was fully depressed. The family member’s Weibo post, however, asks rhetorically “who on earth would press the wrong pedal for 2.6 kilometers in a row?

Tesla issued a statement saying that the “police are currently seeking a third party appraisal agency to identify the truth behind this accident and we will actively provide any necessary assistance,” while cautioning against the spread of rumors before the investigation is over.

During last year’s Shanghai Auto Show, a woman climbed on top of a Tesla wearing T-shirt with a “Brake failure” slogan in order to turn attention to what she claims is a similar accident with her father where the EV accelerated instead of stopping when the brakes were applied, resulting in a multiple vehicle collision, too.
