Huawei announced on October 31 that its Mate Xs 2 folding smartphone launched in April will support Beidou satellite communications. When implemented, the model will become the world’s first foldable smartphone to support this convenient function. The manufacturer has promised to disclose all details at a conference for developers on November 5.
According to IDC data, in the third quarter of 2022, Huawei maintained first place in China’s foldable smartphone market with a share of 44.9%. Prior to this, the Mate Xs 2 was already the first smartphone by Huawei to support triple-band Wi-Fi. Moreover, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 has four concurrent networks, including cellular, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, 5GHz low-frequency Wi-Fi, and 5GHz high-frequency Wi-Fi, enabling fast downloads.
In addition to emergency communication functions, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 also offers a reliable daily experience and a mature ecology. Thanks to hardware innovation, the Mate Xs 2 has three innovative design characteristics: ultra-thin, ultra-flat and ultra-reliable. The net weight of the whole device is about 250 grams, even lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max after film pasting. The device’s double rotor hinge mechanism and the reinforced screen bring an almost invisible crease and improved resistance.
The third iteration of the Beidou Navigation Satellite System provides full global coverage for timing and navigation, offering an alternative to Russia’s GLONASS, the European Galileo positioning system, and the US’s GPS. Its most distinctive function is short message communication. If the phone owner encounters an emergency without signal, they can send a text message to the distress center through Beidou terminal.
However, professional satellite phones are not only expensive, but also often heavy and bulky. Only with long antennas can they realize two-way communication with satellites in areas without signal coverage from the ground base station. The Huawei Mate 50 series, which was released not long ago, is the world’s first smartphone supporting Beidou satellite communication. When the user is in a desert and other emergency scenarios without network signal coverage, the Huawei Mate 50 series can send out text and location information, keep in touch with the outside world, and support generating trajectory maps.
