Fay Burras McCrory, MA Honored for Skill in Teaching Mathematics

CAMP HILL, PA, November 28, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ — Fay Burras McCrory, MA has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Having accrued decades of expertise as an educator, Fay Burras McCrory, MA is highly regarded for her skill in teaching and mathematics. Demonstrating a penchant for numbers and mathematics even as a young person, she recalls the days her father would teach her about numbers and has carried that affinity with her throughout her life.

While in high school, Ms. McCrory spent weekends working at a local market, which afforded her the opportunity to make many meaningful connections, including with an attendee of Lebanon Valley College, who provided her with information about a scholarship exam and advice about undergraduate studies. Through this connection, Ms. McCrory was fortunate to earn college scholarships, which paved the way for her teaching career. She earned a Bachelor of Science from Lebanon Valley College in 1960, followed by a Master of Arts from Smith College in 1961.

In her professional endeavors, Ms. McCrory most recently served as a mathematics professor from 1984 to 2004 at Penn State Harrisburg, also called The Capital College part of The Pennsylvania State University. Earlier, she taught at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania for more than two decades until 1983 and at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, now Randolph College, in Lynchburg, Virginia from 1961 to 1963.

Ms. McCrory notes that during her formative years, it was unusual for women to pursue careers in mathematics and the sciences. To her benefit, she was mentored by many teachers, who supported her strengths, assisted her with material and encouraged her to attend college. Among those who supported her along her professional journey, she specifically credits Dr. Barney Bissinger, the mathematics chairperson at Lebanon Valley College, for his constant motivation.

For aspiring educators, Ms. McCrory stresses the importance of fostering an interest in and love for a particular subject. She believes one should also be willing to align and work productively with different personalities to objectively approach subjects. In addition, she notes the importance for early educators to ensure that their students understand the material being taught and how to use it and apply it properly. Her advice to students is, “Do the best you can under any circumstances.”

Ms. McCrory would like to be remembered as someone who cared deeply about her life’s pursuits. She enjoyed shepherding students through challenging mathematical exercises and continues to find joy in reuniting with former students who now work in varying industries. In her retirement, she remains active with the Prayer Shawl Ministry, where she combines her love of knitting and crocheting with her passion for helping others. Through the ministry, she creates shawls for those in need of comfort and solace, as well as those in celebration and joy. Since joining in 2020, she convenes with the ministry once a month.
