For more than 30 years, New Yorkers and their spectacularly dressed-up pets have descended on downtown Manhattan for the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade, arranged with much fanfare each October. There, pups of all breeds and ages vie for the top prizes across 10 costume categories (among them best group costume, human and dog; best current event costume; best NYC-themed costume; and best Chihuahua, Chi-lloween)—raising money for Tompkins Square Park’s beloved dog run, the oldest in the city, in the process.
The 2022 event, held on Saturday, was one for the ages: A Bichon named Mimi won big with her elaborate “bodega cat” costume, while other dogs appeared as dinosaurs, vampires, pirates, ice cream truck drivers, and more. Poupay Jutharat was on the ground to capture it all; see her shots from the day—and decide for yourself who was the best in show—below.
