A Canadian has regaled the internet with tales of their boss’s new work facility policies that limit toilet breaks to a maximum of 10 minutes, and people online are unimpressed.
On Thursday, the worker, under the username u/Smoothsay, posted a picture of the “New Facility Rules” that their boss just introduced to Reddit, with a caption that read: “This was posted at work today.”
The new rules require employees to be five minutes earlier for their shift every morning, and states that all overtime will need to be approved in advance by the floor manager, and anyone caught submitting unapproved overtime will have their pay reduced.
In addition, the new rules also limit bathroom breaks to a maximum of 10 minutes, stating that: “Any time over will be redacted from pay and employees may be subject to disciplinary action.”
The new rules also ban smoke breaks entirely, asking smoking employees to have their cigarettes at the indicated locations before or after their shift.
The U.S. Department of Labor says that federal law does not require lunch or coffee breaks, but different states have different state laws regarding this issue.
For example, in Colorado employees should get half an hour break if their shift exceeds 5 consecutive hours, and on-duty meal periods are counted as time worked and permitted when the nature of work prevents relief from all duties.
Employees working more than 6 hours a day are entitled to have an uninterrupted break of a minimum of 20 minutes, which they can take in full or in separate shorter breaks.
While employers in the U.S. are allowed to adopt policies that limit employees’ break times, any changes to contractual terms will generally require agreement from the employee, and they may decide to refuse to sign a new contract containing toilet break restrictions.
The post, which was first shared on the r/antiwork sub, has gone viral, receiving over 22,000 upvotes and 3,400 comments.
One user, AngryDrnkBureaucrat, suggested: “Show up at 8:54. Go directly to floor manager to ask about the five minutes of overtime from 8:55 to 9:00. Make him put whatever he says in writing.”
And Maywestpie commented: “Bathroom breaks limited to 10 minutes?? Who exactly is holding the stopwatch while you poo??”
Snarky_snek joked: “Excuse me, sir, sir. It sounds like you still have diarrhea but your maximum allotted time has ended. Please feel free to s*** your pants though.”
Another user, Shitposting24700, pointed out: “Sounds pretty illegal to require employees to be on-site, without pay. Sounds like you need to contact BOLI.” And Gelisan said: “I work in HR in Canada and both the first and second points are 100% illegal.”
AdamJadam summed it all up: “So lemme get this straight, you expect people to work every second of their shift, hang out twiddling their thumbs until it is time to work, and get disciplined if they have any bathroom needs that are longer than 10 minutes.
“Not to mention, they’re not allowed to clock in early due to no overtime, so… what are they supposed to do for those 5 unpaid minutes, exactly? Yet you expect all this to have no profanity involved? Sorry, that’s not humanly possible.”
And waterybooks added: “Don’t forget, they also need to thank their supervisor every day too!”
