For months, rumors have circulated that Kate Middleton and Prince William were planning for a move to Windsor, where they could be away from the hustle and bustle of Kensington Palace and be closer to Queen Elizabeth as she ages. As early as May, reports emerged that the family had settled on Adelaide Cottage, on the Windsor Home Park estate, as their new home, but the couple have not yet confirmed that the move is imminent. According to the Telegraph, however, the move is set to take place in the next two or three weeks, and the family will be downsizing in one major way: Their longtime live-in nanny Maria Borrallo will no longer have a bedroom at their home.
The newspaper reports that Borrallo will continue working for Kate Middleton and Prince William, but for the first time in eight years, she and the couple’s other full-time staffers, which reportedly include a housekeeper, will live nearby because the cottage has only four bedrooms. Borallo was born in Spain and received her education at Norland Cottage, the school famous for training nannies for the upper classes. She began working for the Cambridges in early 2014, when Prince George was about eight months old, and ever since, she has become a fixture when the family travels.
Another reason for the move’s timing might be the fact that summer vacation is drawing to a close. Late last month the Telegraph reported that the three Cambridge children, George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, would all be attending Lambrook, a coeducational school in Berkshire, beginning this fall term. It’s just a short drive away from the family’s new home, and students attend school six days a week. It will be the first time that all three children will attend the same school.
In 2021 sources told Vanity Fair that plans for the move began because the family wanted to spend more time in the countryside and were also thinking about the future of the monarchy. After looking at multiple other properties, they chose Adelaide Cottage, which was built in 1831 for Queen Adelaide, the consort of King William IV, but was most recently refurbished in 2015.
In May, an insider told The Sun that the house wasn’t necessarily the couple’s first choice, but its move-in ready status made it hard to resist. “Finding a way to make Adelaide Cottage work seems to be the best and only option,” the source said. “There are issues with all the other houses, so Adelaide will be the favorite.”
