China retail sales growth slowed to 2.7% in July 2022

In July, the total retail sales of social consumer goods in China was 3,587 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 2.7%. Among them, the retail sales of consumer goods other than automobiles were 3,204.6 billion yuan, up 1.9%.

The retail sales of Chinese urban consumer goods in July was 3,120.5 billion yuan, an increase of 2.7 percent year-on-year; the retail sales of rural consumer goods reached 466.5 billion yuan, an increase of 2.6 percent.

China’s online retail sales reached 7,322.4 billion yuan in the first seven months of 2022, an increase of 3.2 percent year on year. Among them, the online retail sales of physical goods reached 6,315.3 billion yuan, an increase of 5.7 percent, accounting for 25.6 percent of the total retail sales of social consumer goods.

In June, the total retail sales of social consumer goods in China was 3,874.2 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.1%. Among them, the retail sales of consumer goods other than automobiles were 3,419.2 billion yuan, up 1.8%.

In the first half of 2022, the total retail sales of social consumer goods were 21,043.2 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 0.7 percent. Among them, the retail sales of consumer goods other than automobiles were 18,925.1 billion yuan, down 0.1 percent.

The retail sales of Chinese urban consumer goods in June was 3,357.1 billion yuan, an increase of 3.1 percent year-on-year; the retail sales of rural consumer goods reached 517.1 billion yuan, an increase of 2.7 percent.

The retail sales of urban consumer goods reached 18,270.6 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 0.8 percent; and the retail sales of rural consumer goods reached 2,772.6 billion yuan, down 0.3 percent.

In June, retail sales of goods reached 3,497.7 billion yuan, an increase of 3.9 percent year on year; catering revenue was 376.6 billion yuan, down 4.0 percent.

In the first half, retail sales totaled 19,039.2 billion yuan, an increase of 0.1 percent YoY; catering revenue was 2,004 billion yuan, down 7.7 percent.

The retail sales of supermarkets, convenience stores, and professional stores in retail units above the designated size increased by 4.2, 4.7, and 2.8 percent, respectively while department stores and specialty stores decreased by 8.4 and 4.1 percent, respectively.

China’s online retail sales reached 6,300.7 billion yuan in H1, an increase of 3.1 percent year on year. Among them, the online retail sales of physical goods reached 5,449.3 billion yuan, an increase of 5.6 percent, accounting for 25.9 percent of the total retail sales of social consumer goods; among the online retail sales of physical goods, food, clothing and consumer goods increased by 15.7, 2.4 and 5.1 percent respectively.

China retail sales up 3.3% in Q1; online sales up 6.6%

In the first quarter, the total retail sales of social consumer goods in China reached 10,865.9 billion yuan (US$1,701), a year-on-year increase of 3.3% (the following are nominal growth unless otherwise specified).

Among them, the retail sales of consumer goods other than automobiles reached 9,792 billion yuan, an increase of 3.6 percent.

Excluding price factors, the total retail sales of social consumer goods in the first quarter actually increased by 1.3 percent year-on-year. In March, the total retail sales of social consumer goods was 3,423.3 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 3.5 percent.

Among them, the retail sales of consumer goods other than automobiles reached 3,056 billion yuan, down 3.0 percent.

According to the location of business units, the retail sales of urban consumer goods in the first quarter was 9,429.2 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.2 percent; the retail sales of rural consumer goods reached 1,436.7 billion yuan, an increase of 3.5 percent.

In March, the retail sales of urban consumer goods reached 2,969.9 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 3.6 percent; the retail sales of rural consumer goods reached 453.4 billion yuan, down 3.3 percent.

By consumption type, the retail sales of commodities in the first quarter was 9,800.6 billion yuan, an increase of 3.6 percent year-on-year; catering revenue was 1,065.3 billion yuan, an increase of 0.5 percent.

In March, retail sales of goods reached 3,129.8 billion yuan, down 2.1 percent year-on-year; catering revenue was 293.5 billion yuan, down 16.4 percent.

The retail sales of supermarkets, convenience stores, professional stores, and specialty stores in retail units above the designated size in the first quarter increased by 3.2, 10.1, 6.6 and 1.0 percent respectively year-on-year, and the retail sales of department stores decreased by 3.3 percent year-on-year.

In the first quarter, the national online retail sales reached 3,012 billion yuan (US$472 billion), a year-on-year increase of 6.6 percent.

Among them, the online retail sales of physical goods reached 2,525.7 billion yuan, an increase of 8.8 percent, accounting for 23.2% of the total retail sales of social consumer goods; among the online retail sales of physical goods, food, clothing and consumer goods increased by 13.5, 0.9 and 10.6 percent respectively.

China retail sales up 12.5% in 2021; online retail grew 14.1%

In 2021, the total retail sales of consumer goods in China reached 44,082.3 billion yuan, up by 12.5 percent over the previous year with an average two-year growth of 3.9 percent.

The retail sales in urban areas reached 38,155.8 billion yuan, up by 12.5 percent; and the retail sales in rural areas stood at 5,926.5 billion yuan, up by 12.1 percent.

Grouped by consumption patterns, the retail sales of goods were 39,392.8 billion yuan, up by 11.8 percent; and the income of catering was 4,689.5 billion yuan, up by 18.6 percent.

The basic living consumption sustained good momentum of growth, with the retail sales of beverages and grain, oil and food by enterprises above the designated size growing by 20.4 percent and 10.8 percent over the previous year.

The demand for upgraded consumer goods continued to unleash, with the retail sales of “gold, silver, and jewelry” and that of cultural and office supplies by enterprises above the designated size growing by 29.8 percent and 18.8 percent respectively.

In December, the total retail sales of consumer goods grew by 1.7 percent year on year, or down by 0.18 percent month on month.

In 2021, China’s online retail sales reached 13,088.4 billion yuan, growing by 14.1 percent over the previous year. Specifically, the online retail sales of physical goods were 10,804.2 billion yuan, up by 12.0 percent, accounting for 24.5 percent of the total retail sales of consumer goods.

China’s total online retail sales grew 10.9% in 2020

In 2020, China’s total retail sales of consumer goods reached 39,198.1 billion yuan, down by 3.9% over the previous year.

Specifically, the total retail sales of commodities by enterprises above the designated size reached 14,332.3 billion yuan, down by 1.9%.

Analyzed by different areas, the retail sales in urban areas reached 33,911.9 billion yuan, down by 4.0%; and the retail sales in rural areas stood at 5,286.2 billion yuan, down by 3.2%.

Grouped by consumption patterns, the income of catering was 3,952.7 billion yuan, down by 16.6%; and the retail sales of goods were 35,245.3 billion yuan, down by 2.3%. The sales growth of upgraded consumer goods accelerated.

In the fourth quarter of 2020, the retail sales of communication equipment, cosmetics, gold, silver and jewelry by enterprises above the designated size grew by 26.0%, 21.2% and 17.3% respectively, or 16.0 percentage points, 7.1 percentage points, and 5.0 percentage points higher than that in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the total retail sales of consumer goods grew by 4.6% year on year, 3.7 percentage points higher than that in the third quarter.

In December, the total retail sales of consumer goods grew by 4.6% year on year, or 1.24% month on month.

In 2020, the online retail sales in China reached 11,760.1 billion yuan, grew by 10.9% year on year.

Specifically, the online retail sales of physical goods were 9,759.0 billion yuan, up by 14.8%, accounting for 24.9% of the total retail sales of consumer goods, or 4.2 percentage points higher than that of last year.
